Disease description:
What causes excessive eye discharge upon waking in the morning?
There may be several reasons for excessive eye discharge upon waking in the morning. It could be caused by eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, or dry eye syndrome. Conjunctivitis, triggered by bacterial or viral infections, increases vascular permeability on the conjunctival surface, leading to the formation of purulent secretions. Dacryocystitis results from an infectious inflammation of the tear sac, producing yellowish discharge. Dry eye syndrome reduces tear secretion from the lacrimal glands, causing dryness and increased eye discharge. Prolonged sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality may also contribute to increased eye discharge. Additionally, environmental factors such as dust, bacteria, and volatile gases in the air, as well as exposure to bright light, dust, or foreign particles, can irritate the eyes and trigger allergic reactions, manifesting as increased eye discharge.
