After early-stage kidney cancer is cured, is the chance of recurrence high?

The recurrence rate after successful treatment of early-stage kidney cancer is relatively low. The cure rate for early-stage kidney cancer can reach 80%–90%, with a ten-year survival rate exceeding 80%. When kidney cancer is diagnosed at an early stage and treated aggressively with surgical resection—such as nephron-sparing surgery or laparoscopic surgery—the likelihood of clinical cure is high. Meanwhile, the recurrence rate after surgery for early-stage kidney cancer is approximately 20%–25%, and recurrences tend to occur slowly, usually manifesting as local recurrence around 5 to 10 years after surgery. Therefore, patients should undergo regular follow-up examinations under the guidance of their physicians, such as contrast-enhanced CT scans every 3 to 6 months, to ensure disease stability.
