Disease description:

Recently, my child has been having blurry vision. After a vision checkup, the doctor said the child has mild amblyopia. We are currently undergoing corrective treatment, but I'm worried about potential long-term vision problems. I would like to know: what exactly is amblyopia (lazy eye)?

Amblyopia refers to a significant reduction in visual acuity that cannot be explained by any organic eye abnormalities upon thorough examination, and which does not improve substantially with corrective glasses. This condition primarily affects children and infants, especially during the critical period of visual development—typically before the age of 8. During this stage, abnormal visual stimuli such as strabismus (particularly monocular strabismus), significant refractive errors, anisometropia, or congenital eye disorders like cataracts or corneal opacities may lead to reduced corrected vision in one or both eyes. This visual impairment not only affects daily life but may also have long-term consequences on a child's future. Therefore, early detection and treatment of amblyopia are crucial.
