How many days of hospitalization are required for colon polyp surgery?
Disease description:
A few days ago, when I went to the hospital for a checkup, the doctor diagnosed me with colon polyps and said surgery is needed. How many days do I need to stay in the hospital for colon polyp surgery?
The length of hospital stay for colon polyp surgery mainly depends on the surgical method, the size of the polyp, and the patient's overall health condition. Generally, patients need to stay in the hospital for 3 to 7 days after colon polyp surgery. If the polyp is relatively small, typically between 2–3 cm, high-frequency electrocoagulation resection under colonoscopy can be performed, which is a minimally invasive procedure. Recovery is usually quick, and patients can typically be discharged after about 3 days. However, if the polyp is larger—such as 5–6 cm or more—laparoscopic or open abdominal surgery may be required. These procedures involve greater surgical trauma and longer recovery times, so patients usually need to stay in the hospital for about 7 days for observation and recovery. For patients with poor physical condition or multiple chronic diseases, reduced physiological function may lead to a slower recovery, potentially requiring a hospital stay exceeding 7 days.
