Disease description:
What causes persistent blood in urine after kidney stone stent surgery?
Persistent hematuria after kidney stone stent placement surgery may be caused by irritation from the stent. The stent placed during the procedure can rub against the ureteral mucosa, leading to mucosal damage and subsequent blood in the urine. This condition is usually normal, with typically minimal bleeding that gradually decreases and eventually resolves over time. Hematuria could also result from residual stones; although the surgery aims to remove all stones, small fragments may remain in the body. As these stones pass, they may irritate the urinary tract mucosa and cause bleeding. Additionally, the presence of the stent may compromise the integrity of the urinary mucosa, increasing the risk of bacterial invasion and resulting in a urinary tract infection, which can also lead to hematuria. If the stent is improperly positioned, it may increase friction against the ureteral mucosa, causing persistent bleeding. If hematuria continues or is accompanied by severe symptoms, prompt medical evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
