What causes dry stools?
Disease description:
My recent bowel movements have been dry. What causes dry stools?
Possible causes of dry bowel movements may include the following:
1. Dietary factors: Excessive intake of high-protein and high-fat foods, coupled with insufficient dietary fiber, can easily lead to dry stools. In addition, consumption of spicy or irritating foods may exacerbate this issue.
2. Lifestyle habits: Poor lifestyle habits, such as prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity, can impair intestinal motility, causing stool to remain in the intestines for extended periods and allowing excessive water absorption.
3. Fluid intake: Inadequate fluid intake leads the intestines to absorb more water, resulting in dry stools.
4. Medications: Long-term use of certain medications—such as bismuth agents for stomach conditions, antipsychotic drugs, or iron supplements—may also cause dry bowel movements.
If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
