Can a CT scan detect concussion in babies?
Disease description:
When taking care of my child today, he accidentally fell from a height. I suspect he might have a concussion. If we go to the hospital, can a CT scan detect it?
A baby's concussion generally cannot be directly detected through CT scans. This is because a concussion primarily refers to temporary brain dysfunction caused by external force to the head, without obvious structural changes. CT scans are mainly used to detect structural abnormalities such as skull fractures, intracranial bleeding, or tumors, and are not sensitive to functional impairments. In cases of concussion, since there is no clear structural damage to the brain, CT imaging often fails to directly reveal the presence of a concussion. If a baby has severe increased intracranial pressure or an open cranial injury, CT scanning is not recommended, as it may worsen the condition or increase the risk of infection.
