Are multiple colon polyps serious?
Disease description:
Recently, my husband was found to have polyps in his colon during a routine checkup. I'm very worried about him. Are multiple colonic polyps serious?
The severity of multiple colonic polyps depends on several factors. In terms of pathological nature, benign polyps are generally not serious but require regular follow-up examinations; malignant polyps, however, are more serious and need timely treatment, as they may progress to colorectal cancer and threaten life. The size of the polyps also affects their severity—polyps smaller than 1 cm in diameter carry a lower risk of malignant transformation, whereas those larger than 1 cm have a higher risk. Factors such as family history, aging, and poor dietary habits may further increase the severity of multiple colonic polyps. The seriousness of multiple colonic polyps must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. For small and benign polyps, conservative management or medical treatment may be appropriate; for malignant or larger polyps, surgical intervention is usually recommended. Additionally, patients should adjust their lifestyle habits, maintain a healthy diet, and reduce the risk of disease progression.
