What causes redness and swelling of the skin at the base of the nail, and how is it treated?
Disease description:
Recently, the skin around the base of my nail has become slightly red and swollen, accompanied by throbbing pain and tenderness. I would like to know what might be causing redness and swelling in the skin at the base of the nail, and how it should be treated?
Redness and swelling of the skin at the base of the nail may be caused by various factors, primarily including trauma, paronychia, and purulent flexor tenosynovitis. Trauma, resulting from impacts or compression, can lead to local tissue congestion and swelling. Paronychia is often caused by infection with Staphylococcus aureus, manifesting as redness, swelling, and pain around the nail. Purulent flexor tenosynovitis is a subcutaneous pyogenic infection on the palmar surface of the distal phalanx, which can also cause redness and swelling at the base of the nail. Regarding treatment, wounds due to trauma should be promptly cleaned and dressed to prevent infection. Paronychia and purulent flexor tenosynovitis can be treated with topical medications (such as mupirocin ointment or Ruyi Jinhuang powder) or oral antibiotics (such as cefradine capsules). In severe cases, such as when an abscess has formed, surgical incision and drainage may be required. Individuals experiencing redness and swelling at the base of the nail should seek timely medical attention to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
