What causes persistent dry mouth and bad breath?
Disease description:
Recently, I've been constantly experiencing dry mouth; no matter how much water I drink or how much I sleep, it doesn't help. What could be causing persistent dry mouth and bad breath?
Persistent dry mouth and bad breath may be caused by the following factors:
1. Oral diseases: Conditions such as periodontitis and gingivitis can lead to bacterial overgrowth in the mouth, impair saliva secretion, and consequently cause dry mouth and halitosis.
2. Digestive issues: Gastrointestinal disorders like indigestion and chronic gastritis can interfere with food digestion and absorption, causing food to remain and ferment in the intestines, producing odors that are released through the mouth.
3. Systemic diseases: Conditions such as diabetes and Sjögren's syndrome can affect the body's water metabolism and reduce saliva production, leading to dry mouth and often accompanied by bad breath.
4. Medications: Certain drugs, such as atropine and methyldopa, may stimulate the oral cavity, resulting in dry mouth and indirectly contributing to halitosis.
5. Lifestyle habits: Poor habits such as chronic mouth breathing, inadequate fluid intake, and poor oral hygiene can also contribute to dry mouth and bad breath.
