My cousin's child has been diagnosed with autism. He enjoys playing with other children, but we are very concerned about him and would like to know whether autism is先天 (congenital) or acquired after birth.

Autism is a complex disorder whose causes may involve both innate factors and environmental influences. On one hand, autism is affected by genetic factors; for instance, a family history of autism or other mental disorders may increase an individual's risk of developing autism. In addition, congenital gene mutations and chromosomal abnormalities are also associated with the development of autism. On the other hand, acquired factors such as abnormal brain function and development, psychological factors, environmental influences, and certain infectious diseases are also considered important contributing causes. In particular, environmental factors—such as growing up in an excessively isolated environment—may lead children to experience fear and loneliness, potentially contributing to the development of autism. Therefore, the causes of autism are multifaceted and cannot be attributed solely to either innate or acquired factors; rather, they result from the interaction of both.
