Does premature birth in children increase the risk of developing pediatric hyperactivity disorder?

Disease description:

My child is a premature baby, and recently he has been having difficulty concentrating and tends to be noisy regardless of the setting. I suspect this might be attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) caused by prematurity. Does being born prematurely increase the risk of developing childhood ADHD?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng
Premature birth in children may increase the risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prematurity can affect the development of a child's nervous system, as premature infants' brains and other organs may not yet be fully developed. This may lead to difficulties with behavior or learning, including problems with attention deficits and hyperactivity. In addition, preterm infants are more likely than full-term infants to face various health challenges, which could indirectly increase their risk of developing ADHD later in life. However, this does not mean that all premature babies will develop ADHD, as the condition arises from a combination of genetic, environmental, and other factors. Therefore, parents and healthcare providers should pay closer attention to children born prematurely, promptly identifying and addressing any potential developmental issues to reduce the risk of future behavioral disorders such as ADHD.
