Disease description:

I am slightly nearsighted and have to wear glasses all the time. I'm worried that I might develop presbyopia in the future, so I'd like to ask: can nearsighted people get presbyopia?

Myopia and presbyopia are two different eye conditions, but they can coexist in the same person. Myopia is primarily caused by an elongated eyeball or excessive curvature of the cornea or lens, resulting in distant objects being unable to form a clear image on the retina. Presbyopia, on the other hand, is a natural phenomenon associated with aging, mainly due to a decline in the eye's focusing ability, making it difficult to see nearby objects clearly. Although myopia and presbyopia have different causes and manifestations, individuals with myopia will also develop presbyopia as they age. This is because presbyopia results from the natural aging of the eye and is unrelated to whether a person has myopia. Middle-aged and older individuals with myopia may need to wear both myopic glasses for distance vision and reading glasses for near vision to meet their different visual needs.
