Is acupuncture effective in treating myopia?
Disease description:
I feel that my myopia has been getting worse recently. My friend recommended acupuncture treatment for myopia, so I'd like to ask: is acupuncture effective for treating myopia?
Acupuncture may have a certain auxiliary effect in treating myopia, but the results are not significant. As a traditional Chinese therapy, acupuncture stimulates specific acupoints—such as Fengchi (GB20), Zusanli (ST36), and Jingming (BL1)—to improve blood circulation in the eyes, relieve eye fatigue, and enhance relaxation of the optic nerve, thereby alleviating symptoms of myopia. However, acupuncture cannot alter the pathological structural changes associated with myopia, such as alterations in the lens within the eyeball. Therefore, acupuncture should not be considered a primary treatment for myopia. For individuals with myopia, more effective treatments include maintaining proper eye-use habits, wearing appropriate corrective glasses, or undergoing laser surgery.
