Dr. Guo Huijie
Gingivitis usually does not directly cause parotitis, but if not effectively treated in time, it may indirectly lead to parotitis. Gingivitis is primarily caused by factors such as dental plaque, food irritation, or tartar, and can result in redness, swelling, pain, and bleeding of the gums. Parotitis, on the other hand, is an acute respiratory infectious disease mainly caused by viral infection, spreading through respiratory droplets or contact with virus-contaminated objects. Although gingivitis and parotitis differ in their underlying causes, untreated gingivitis may irritate nearby tissues, thereby increasing the risk of developing parotitis. Therefore, if symptoms of gingivitis appear, prompt medical attention should be sought along with appropriate treatment, and good oral hygiene practices should be maintained. Additionally, consumption of spicy or irritating foods should be avoided to reduce irritation to the gums.
