Treatment of onychomycosis primarily focuses on antifungal therapy and removal of infected nails, and can be carried out using various methods: 1. Topical medications: Antifungal agents such as terbinafine hydrochloride solution or amorolfine hydrochloride lacquer are applied directly to the affected nail. These drugs have strong penetration and are used locally 2–3 times daily for a duration of 6–12 months. 2. Oral medications: Systemic antifungals such as fluconazole capsules or itraconazole capsules significantly improve cure rates. However, these treatments require long-term use with relatively high dosages, and careful monitoring for adverse drug reactions is necessary. 3. Surgical nail removal: In severe cases or when other treatments fail, surgical debridement or complete nail avulsion may be performed. This method carries risks of bleeding and infection and is not recommended for patients with underlying conditions such as heart disease or hypertension. 4. Other therapies: Modern approaches including photodynamic therapy and laser treatment, as well as traditional Chinese medicine techniques such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal soaking baths, may be considered based on individual patient circumstances. The choice of treatment for onychomycosis should be tailored to the severity of the condition and the patient’s overall health. Consistent, long-term treatment is essential, along with measures to prevent recurrence.
