Pain in the big toe and surrounding soft tissue can be caused by various factors. It may result from gouty arthritis, which occurs when elevated levels of uric acid in the body lead to the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, triggering inflammation and localized pain. Rheumatoid arthritis could also cause such symptoms; this is a chronic autoimmune disorder that leads to joint swelling and pain. Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) is a fungal skin infection that, if affecting the area around the toes, may also cause local discomfort. Other conditions such as hallux valgus, tendonitis, flat feet, and paronychia can likewise lead to pain in the big toe and adjacent tissues. If experiencing such symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
