I just found out my colleague accidentally contracted HIV, although they have since recovered. Since we work together regularly, I'm wondering: can HIV be transmitted through mosquito bites?

Mosquito bites do not transmit HIV. The virus cannot survive or replicate inside mosquitoes and is quickly broken down by the mosquito's digestive enzymes. When a mosquito feeds on blood, it does not inject previously ingested blood into the next person it bites, making transmission of HIV through mosquitoes impossible. Even if a mosquito bites an individual infected with HIV, the amount of virus present in the mosquito's body is extremely small—far too little to cause infection in another person. Mosquito bites are not a route of HIV transmission, so there is no need for excessive concern. HIV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, blood-to-blood contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
