Can gray nail (onychomycosis) cause itchy feet?

I have toenails, but recently there's been some inflammation. I'm worried it might be caused by a fungal infection. Can athlete's foot cause itchy feet?
There are differing opinions regarding whether onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) can cause itchy feet. Some believe that onychomycosis may lead to foot itching. This is because onychomycosis is a condition caused by fungal invasion of the nail plate and underlying tissue, resulting in abnormal thickening of the nail's keratin layer. This causes the nail surface to become rough and uneven, potentially triggering itchiness in the feet. Particularly in patients with diabetes, circulatory disorders, or compromised local skin barriers, the risk of infection increases, raising the likelihood of developing onychomycosis, which may be accompanied by itching symptoms.
On the other hand, some argue that onychomycosis typically does not cause foot itching. Since onychomycosis is a fungal infection limited to the nail structure and is not contagious to surrounding skin, it generally does not irritate nearby skin or induce itching.
Therefore, if symptoms of onychomycosis are observed along with foot itching, timely medical consultation is recommended. Additionally, maintaining clean and dry feet, and avoiding sharing footwear or socks with others, can help prevent transmission.
