Applying ice can help relieve toothache to some extent, but it is not effective for all types of dental pain. For toothaches caused by pulpitis, trauma, or excessive biting force, ice application may reduce pain by constricting blood vessels, reducing inflammation, and relieving muscle tension. However, ice therapy is not suitable for all cases—for instance, tooth pain due to pulp necrosis might worsen with ice application. The proper method involves placing clean ice cubes in a plastic bag, wrapping the bag in a towel, and then applying it to the cheek area corresponding to the affected tooth for 15–20 minutes at a time. Although ice application can temporarily alleviate pain, it cannot replace professional medical treatment. Therefore, if tooth pain persists or worsens, prompt medical attention is recommended to avoid delaying diagnosis and treatment.
