Can scabies mites crawl into bedding?
Disease description:
My roommate has scabies. The doctor said it's contagious. If I don't have direct contact with my roommate, can the mites crawl into my bedding?
Scabies mites can crawl into bedding. Scabies mites, also known as Sarcoptes scabiei, are tiny parasitic organisms that primarily infest the upper layer of human skin, especially in soft and folded areas such as between the fingers, wrists, armpits, groin, and around the genitals. They feed on human skin keratin and burrow tunnels into the skin for reproduction and habitation. Since scabies mites are mobile, they can not only move across human skin but may also crawl onto clothing, bed sheets, blankets, and other personal items. Therefore, if these items have been used or touched by an infected person, the mites may attach themselves to the surfaces and spread to others. To prevent transmission, it is important to maintain personal hygiene, regularly wash and change bed linens, pillowcases, and other fabrics, and avoid sharing personal items with infected individuals.
