Language delay in children is not necessarily a sign of autism, although autism is often accompanied by delayed language development. Language delay may be caused by various factors, such as intellectual disability, hearing impairment, articulation organ disorders, central nervous system diseases, and poor language environments. Autism, on the other hand, is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication difficulties, and restricted interests. In individuals with autism, language delay typically manifests as impaired language comprehension and significantly delayed speech development, including an inability to form complete sentences. Moreover, apart from language difficulties, autistic individuals also exhibit other social and emotional challenges. Children presenting with language delays should undergo comprehensive evaluations to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate interventions accordingly.
