Can porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns develop dental caries?
Disease description:
I had porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns done two years ago. There is a hole on one of the crowns. Can a PFM crown develop dental caries?

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns themselves do not develop dental caries because they are fabricated from cast synthetic metal or metal with an overlay of porcelain material, which by its nature is not susceptible to decay. However, fractures or chipping of the material may occur. Nevertheless, the abutment teeth beneath the PFM crowns or adjacent natural teeth may develop caries if not properly maintained. For example, if the margin between the crown and the abutment tooth is not completely sealed, or if gaps exist between the crown and neighboring teeth, food debris may accumulate, leading to bacterial growth and subsequent caries. Therefore, even after receiving PFM crowns, it remains essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices and undergo regular dental check-ups to prevent caries.
