Disease description:

I've been hospitalized for pancreatitis these two days. Today, my doctor told me that my carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test result is positive. I would like to know if a positive CEA result means cancer?

Dr. Qi Zhirong
A positive result for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) does not directly indicate the presence of cancer. CEA is a tumor marker, and its normal value is generally less than 5 ng/mL. When CEA levels exceed the normal range, it may suggest the presence of certain diseases, including malignant tumors, but it can also be caused by other conditions. Therefore, a positive CEA result alone is insufficient for a cancer diagnosis. Doctors will perform a comprehensive evaluation combining clinical symptoms, imaging studies, and other laboratory findings. If CEA levels continue to rise or show an increasing trend, further detailed examinations are recommended to determine the presence of a malignant tumor. A positive carcinoembryonic antigen test does not directly equate to cancer; comprehensive analysis and additional tests are necessary to establish a definitive diagnosis.
