I've had herpes zoster for a long time, and it has now formed scabs. May I ask if the formation of scabs means that herpes zoster has healed?

Herpes zoster crusting does not directly equate to complete recovery. Although crusting indicates improvement of the herpes lesion, it merely suggests the condition has entered a later stage, rather than representing full recovery. During the crusting phase, the patient's immunity remains low, which may lead to secondary infections and cause recurrence of the illness. Therefore, crusting in herpes zoster does not mean the disease has completely resolved. True recovery can only be considered when the crusts have completely fallen off naturally. Normally, it takes approximately 3–4 days for crusts to shed naturally after scabbing. During this period, patients still require ongoing treatment, such as taking antiviral medications and nerve-nourishing drugs, to prevent complications like postherpetic neuralgia. At the same time, patients should maintain local hygiene, avoid scratching the scabs, and prevent infections or new scars from developing. Herpes zoster crusting is a sign of improvement, but not a marker of full recovery; patients must continue treatment and maintain proper care.
