What causes sore throat, dry mouth, and thirst?
Disease description:
I have a sore throat with cracked, bleeding lips and a very dry, itchy throat. I would like to know the reasons behind these symptoms of heatiness, dry mouth, and thirst.
There are several causes for excessive internal heat manifesting as dry mouth and thirst, mainly including:
1. Improper diet: Long-term consumption of spicy and stimulating foods, such as hot pot and barbecue, or excessive intake of greasy foods may lead to accumulation of damp-heat in the body, causing symptoms of excessive internal heat, manifested as dry mouth and thirst.
2. Yin deficiency with internal heat: According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, depletion of body fluids (yin) leads to an inability to balance the yang, resulting in fire or heat due to yin deficiency, which can also cause dry mouth and thirst. This condition is usually associated with chronic late-night activities, aging, or long-term illness.
3. Environmental factors: Prolonged exposure to high temperature and dry environments may decrease body fluids, leading to symptoms of excessive heat, dry mouth, and thirst.
4. Emotional disturbances: Long-term anxiety, depression, or excessive mental stress may cause poor circulation of qi and blood, resulting in localized stagnation transforming into heat, manifested as dry mouth and tongue.
5. Disease-related factors: Certain diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, may also present with symptoms of dry mouth and thirst. Particularly in diabetic patients, high blood sugar levels lead to fluid loss, making such symptoms more likely to occur.
If symptoms persist or worsen, timely medical consultation is advised to identify the cause and provide appropriate treatment.
