What are the causes of left toothache?
Disease description:
I experienced severe pain in my left teeth while at work this afternoon. What could be the cause of pain in the left teeth?
Possible causes of left-sided toothache mainly include the following conditions:
1. Dental caries: Prolonged neglect of oral hygiene can lead to excessive bacterial growth in the mouth, causing destruction of the tooth's hard tissue and the formation of cavities. Pain may occur after food impaction.
2. Pulpitis: Often develops from untreated dental caries. Bacteria invade the pulp chamber, causing pulp tissue congestion and inflammation, resulting in spontaneous sharp pain that often radiates to the same side of the head and face. The tooth becomes particularly sensitive to hot and cold stimuli.
3. Apical periodontitis: When pulpitis is not treated promptly, the inflammation spreads further to the tissues surrounding the root apex, leading to apical periodontitis. This causes a dull or throbbing pain and affects chewing function.
4. Pericoronitis of wisdom tooth: When the left wisdom tooth erupts incompletely or is malpositioned, it can form a blind pocket where food debris accumulates, leading to bacterial infection and causing swelling and pain in the surrounding gum tissue.
For left-sided toothache, timely medical consultation is recommended to determine the underlying cause and implement targeted treatment measures such as dental fillings, root canal treatment, tooth extraction, or anti-inflammatory therapy.
