How should duodenal ulcers be treated?
Disease description:
I have had severe stomach pain recently and was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer after undergoing a gastroscopy. How should a duodenal ulcer be treated?
The treatment of duodenal ulcers mainly includes:
1. Drug therapy: Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole are the first-line treatment. A full course of 4–6 weeks is required. Additionally, mucosal protective agents such as teprenone can be used to protect the gastric mucosa.
2. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori: For patients with duodenal ulcers complicated by H. pylori infection, active eradication therapy is necessary to prevent recurrence.
3. Endoscopic therapy: For duodenal ulcers complicated by bleeding, endoscopic treatments such as epinephrine injection, application of large clips, or thermal coagulation may be used.
4. Surgical treatment: Patients with duodenal ulcers complicated by clear obstruction or perforation require surgical intervention.
