Disease description:

I have a very close friend who recently suddenly experienced heavy nosebleeds and was diagnosed with leukemia after a hospital examination. May I ask if leukemia is contagious?

Dr. Liu Feng
Leukemia is a malignant tumor originating from hematopoietic stem cells, primarily characterized by the abnormal proliferation of white blood cells within the bone marrow, infiltration of tissues and organs, and suppression of normal hematopoietic function. Regarding whether leukemia is contagious, scientific research indicates that leukemia is not an infectious disease and therefore cannot be transmitted through any route. The development of leukemia is associated with factors such as viral infections, chemical substances, radiation, and genetic predispositions. These factors act on the body, leading to genetic mutations in hematopoietic stem cells, which subsequently trigger leukemia. Although leukemia patients' blood and bodily fluids contain cancer cells, these cells cannot survive in external environments, and therefore cannot be transmitted to others through blood, bodily fluids, or other means.
