What to do about kidney stone pain
Disease description:
I have had kidney stones for many years, and today I experienced kidney stone pain again. What should I do?

When experiencing pain from kidney stones, the following measures can help alleviate the discomfort:
1. Medication: Oral or injectable analgesics, such as diclofenac sodium, indomethacin, or pethidine, can rapidly relieve pain.
2. Acupressure: Apply pressure to the Kidney Shu (BL23) and Chengshan (BL57) acupoints. Each pressing session should last at least 15 seconds, which may help relieve renal colic.
3. Heat application: Apply a warm, moist towel or a hot water bottle to the painful area to promote blood circulation and reduce spasmodic contractions.
4. Adjusting posture: Changing body positions appropriately, such as lying prone with legs extended, may sometimes relieve pain.
5. Drinking plenty of water: Increased fluid intake boosts urine production, which helps expel small stones and alleviates spasmodic contractions of the renal pelvis and ureters.
6. Seeking medical treatment: If the pain is severe and unbearable, timely medical attention is necessary. Treatment options may include extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
