Dr. Guo Huijie
Smoking is not recommended for patients with pulpitis during the course of the disease. Although smoking does not directly worsen the condition of pulpitis—as pulpitis is primarily an inflammation caused by bacterial infection of the hard tissues of the tooth, and its symptoms, such as intermittent spontaneous pain and radiating pain, are not directly caused by smoking—smoking can negatively affect overall health and may indirectly impact oral health. Specifically, smoking can worsen oral hygiene, increase the formation of dental calculus and dental plaque, thereby potentially aggravating or triggering other oral diseases, including pulpitis. In addition, smoking causes damage to systems such as the lungs and the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, increasing the risk of various diseases. Therefore, for the protection of both dental and overall health, patients with pulpitis are advised to avoid smoking as much as possible during the illness and in daily life, actively improve oral hygiene habits, and undergo regular dental examinations and treatments.
