The causes of appendicitis are varied and include: 1. Obstruction of the appendiceal lumen: This is the most common cause of appendicitis, accounting for approximately 60%. Due to the narrow and long structure of the appendix and its small opening, the lumen is prone to blockage by hyperplastic lymphoid follicles, fecaliths, roundworms, tumors, or other foreign bodies. This obstruction increases intraluminal pressure and allows bacterial proliferation, leading to inflammation. 2. Bacterial infection: Following blockage of the appendiceal lumen, bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) may invade the wall of the appendix, causing infection and worsening the condition of appendicitis. 3. Unhealthy lifestyle habits: Long-term unhealthy dietary habits (such as overeating or consuming contaminated food), chronic sleep deprivation, excessive fatigue, and vigorous physical activity immediately after meals may all increase the risk of developing appendicitis. 4. Other factors: Conditions such as a common cold that lowers the body's immune function or gastrointestinal dysfunction may also act as triggers for appendicitis. Additionally, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as patients with HIV/AIDS or those receiving immunosuppressive therapy, are more susceptible to developing appendicitis.
