How severe is polycythemia vera?
Disease description:
Recently, I have been experiencing frequent headaches, dizziness, flushed complexion, and skin itching. The test results indicate polycythemia vera. How serious is this condition?
Polycythemia vera (PV) is a relatively serious disease, and its severity is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1. Incurable: Polycythemia vera is associated with genetic mutations. Currently, there is no cure, and symptoms can only be controlled through medications and injections.
2. High risk of complications: Patients may develop severe complications such as bleeding, thrombosis, and embolism, which carry high mortality rates. Thrombosis, in particular, is a common complication in PV patients and is related to increased blood viscosity and elevated platelet count and activity.
3. Involvement of multiple systems: PV can damage multiple systems in the body, including the nervous system, digestive system, and hematologic system, thereby affecting the patient's quality of life.
4. Diverse symptoms: Patients may experience various symptoms such as headache, dizziness, pruritus (itching), and erythromelalgia (a burning pain in the limbs), some of which can significantly impact the patient's daily life.
