How soon after childbirth can one use a postpartum abdominal binder?
Disease description:
May I ask, my wife is 28 years old this year, and she has recently just given birth. I would like to know how long after childbirth she can start using a postpartum abdominal binder.
How soon after childbirth a postpartum abdominal belt can be used mainly depends on the mode of delivery.
1. For vaginal delivery, it is generally recommended to start using an abdominal belt three days after childbirth. The use of an abdominal belt helps with postpartum uterine involution, pelvic recovery, accelerates lochia discharge, and alleviates abdominal pain. However, it should be noted that each usage should not be too long—usually 2 to 3 hours at a time, with no more than 8 hours per day. The abdominal belt should also be loosened during rest, bed rest, or sleep.
2. For cesarean section, due to the incisions made in the uterus and abdomen during surgery, it is generally advised to wait until one week postpartum or until the wound has healed before using an abdominal belt. Early use may increase abdominal pressure, interfere with wound healing and blood circulation. Similarly, the duration of use should be controlled to avoid prolonged wear.
The specific timing for using a postpartum abdominal belt should be determined according to individual circumstances and medical advice to ensure safety and effectiveness.
