When experiencing severe swelling from insect bites, the following measures can be taken: 1. Avoid scratching: Although the bite area may itch, scratching can worsen the inflammatory response and potentially lead to skin infection. 2. Cold compress: Apply a cold compress using an ice pack or a cold, wet towel to help relieve itching and reduce swelling. 3. Clean and disinfect: Gently clean the bite area with warm water and mild soap to remove residual mosquito saliva and keep the skin clean. 4. Topical medications: Apply anti-inflammatory and antiallergic medications such as calamine lotion, cooling oil, or mometasone furoate cream. For severe redness and swelling, use a wet compress with 3% boric acid solution. 5. Oral medications: If itching is severe, take oral antihistamines such as loratadine or cetirizine as directed by a physician. If redness and swelling persist, this may indicate an infection, in which case medical attention should be sought and oral antibiotics taken as directed by a physician. 6. Maintain environmental hygiene: Regularly clean your living space, open windows for ventilation, and maintain a clean and tidy environment to reduce mosquito breeding.
