What are the common diseases in the elderly?
Disease description:
My grandfather has never been in good health. His heart hasn't been very healthy either, and he now frequently experiences minor health issues. I would like to ask what are the common diseases affecting elderly individuals as they age?
Common diseases in the elderly are diverse and mainly include, but are not limited to, the following categories:
1. Cardiovascular diseases: such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, and myocardial infarction. These diseases are closely related to vascular aging and functional decline in the elderly.
2. Respiratory diseases: such as chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The elderly experience weakened respiratory function, making them more susceptible to infections and other impacts.
3. Metabolic diseases: such as type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Insulin secretion decreases and insulin resistance increases in the elderly, leading to a higher likelihood of abnormalities in blood glucose and lipid levels.
4. Skeletal system diseases: such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. The elderly have reduced bone density, increasing the risk of fractures and joint diseases.
5. Malignant tumors: with increasing age, accumulation of genetic mutations and declining immunity raise the risk of developing malignant tumors in the elderly.
The elderly also frequently suffer from neurological diseases (such as cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage), digestive system diseases (such as chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer), and psychological disorders (such as depression and anxiety). These diseases significantly impact the health and quality of life of the elderly; therefore, prevention and early treatment must be strengthened.
