Hepatitis A generally does not require antiviral treatment. Hepatitis A, also known as hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, is typically a self-limiting illness, meaning that in most cases, the body's immune system can clear the virus on its own following infection, leading to recovery. Therefore, for patients with mild or moderate hepatitis A, specific antiviral medications are usually unnecessary. Instead, rest, proper nutrition, and adequate hydration are recommended to support recovery. However, in certain situations, such as severe illness, acute liver failure, or chronic infection, antiviral therapy may be considered. In such cases, doctors may prescribe antiviral medications, such as interferon or nucleoside analogs, to inhibit viral replication, alleviate symptoms, and prevent complications. Additionally, women who contract hepatitis A during pregnancy, particularly in the second or third trimester, may face increased risks of hepatitis activity and pregnancy-related complications. In these cases, antiviral treatment under a physician's guidance may also be necessary.
