Xerostomia (dry mouth) is usually caused by reduced saliva secretion and may result from various factors. The following are some common causes:

1. Physiological factors: such as prolonged talking, rapid breathing, nervousness or anxiety, and natural decline in salivary gland function associated with aging.

2. Medication side effects: many medications, including certain antidepressants, antihistamines, and drugs used to treat high blood pressure, may cause dry mouth as a side effect.

3. Systemic diseases: conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, kidney disease, or liver disease can all affect the function of salivary glands.

4. Radiation therapy or chemotherapy: these treatments can damage salivary glands, leading to dry mouth.

5. Neurogenic dry mouth: neurological diseases or injuries, such as Parkinson's disease or stroke, may also cause dry mouth.

6. Dehydration: insufficient water intake or excessive fluid loss due to sweating, diarrhea, vomiting, and other conditions can lead to dry mouth.

7. Oral health issues: periodontal disease, oral infections, or oral surgery may also temporarily cause dry mouth.

Patients should increase fluid intake to maintain proper hydration. Beverages containing caffeine or alcohol should be avoided, as they may exacerbate dry mouth. If symptoms persist, prompt medical attention is advised.
