Disease description:

My impacted wisdom tooth has been inflamed and very painful recently. I want to have it extracted, but my friend advises against it. I would like to ask the doctor: what are the risks or disadvantages of wisdom tooth extraction?

Dr. Liu Chao

Wisdom tooth extraction, or the removal of the third molars, is usually performed when pain, infection, crowding, or other oral problems occur. Although wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure, it still carries certain risks and complications, including:

1. Short-term discomfort: Mild pain, swelling, bleeding, and bad breath may occur after surgery. Doctors typically recommend ice compresses and pain medications to alleviate symptoms.

2. Infection: The surgical site may become infected; maintaining oral hygiene and taking antibiotics as prescribed are necessary.

3. Dry socket: Premature loss of the blood clot in the tooth socket can expose the wound, delay healing, and require prompt medical attention.

4. Nerve injury: Wisdom teeth are close to the inferior alveolar nerve, and the extraction may affect nearby nerves, causing temporary or permanent numbness, although this is relatively rare.

5. Worsening of oral conditions: If the wisdom tooth is not completely removed or the wound heals poorly, it may lead to oral diseases such as osteomyelitis of the jaw.

6. Systemic reactions: Some individuals may experience general symptoms such as low-grade fever and fatigue, which typically resolve on their own within a few days.

7. Complications from anesthesia: Local anesthesia may cause temporary soft tissue damage or allergic reactions inside the mouth.

If you experience any discomfort, you should contact your doctor immediately.
