Is it possible to be allergic to Chuanxiong?
Disease description:
Today I bought some Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong) while on a business trip. I heard from a friend that Chuan Xiong may cause allergic reactions. Can Chuan Xiong cause allergies?
Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) may cause allergic reactions. As a traditional Chinese herb, Chuanxiong has a complex composition containing various compounds such as volatile oils, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and other types of compounds. Although Chuanxiong has multiple therapeutic effects in traditional Chinese medicine, including promoting blood circulation, regulating qi, relieving wind-related conditions, and alleviating pain, some individuals may experience allergic reactions after exposure to or ingestion of Chuanxiong. Symptoms of Chuanxiong allergy can vary among individuals but commonly include cutaneous manifestations (such as rash, itching, skin eruptions, or urticaria), gastrointestinal symptoms (such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain), respiratory symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing), and cardiovascular symptoms (such as palpitations, hypotension, or syncope). Additionally, some patients may experience systemic symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue.
