Disease description:

When I gave birth to my child, I had a cesarean section. Now I am experiencing postpartum vaginal discharge (lochia). I would like to ask the doctor: how long does lochia last after a cesarean section?

Dr. Zhao Xiaodong
The duration of lochia discharge after cesarean section varies among individuals, but generally lasts around 4 to 6 weeks. During this period, the color and characteristics of lochia will change: initially, lochia is bloody (bright red in color, containing a large amount of blood, small blood clots, and shed endometrial tissue), gradually turning into serous lochia (light red, containing endometrial tissue, mucus, vaginal secretions, and bacteria), and finally becoming white lochia (no longer containing blood, but rich in white blood cells, endometrial tissue, epithelial cells, and bacteria, making the discharge thicker and whiter in color). It is important to note that if complications such as endometritis or poor healing of the uterine incision occur after cesarean section, the duration of lochia discharge may be prolonged. Therefore, postpartum women should closely monitor their lochia following a cesarean section. If the lochia lasts longer than usual, is excessive in amount, or has an unusual odor, timely medical evaluation is necessary.
