Does wearing glasses for a long time cause the eyes to bulge?
Disease description:
My eyes are nearsighted, and I am concerned that wearing glasses for an extended period may cause my eyes to bulge. Can prolonged use of glasses lead to bulging eyes?
Wearing glasses for an extended period does not itself cause protruding eyes. Eye protrusion is typically a pathological change associated with the degree of myopia, such as thyroid eye disease or elevated intraocular pressure. With myopia, the eyeball may gradually elongate, but this is primarily due to structural changes within the eye rather than the use of glasses. Glasses serve to correct vision, help the eyes focus light, and reduce visual fatigue; they do not alter the physiological structure of the eyeball.
Note that individuals with high myopia (greater than 600 diopters) may have longer axial lengths of the eyeball, which can visually appear as protruding eyes. This condition is not caused by glasses, but rather by the physiological changes associated with myopia itself. If you are concerned about eye protrusion or experience other ocular discomforts, you should consult a doctor promptly for an examination. Regular check-ups are helpful for monitoring eye health and detecting and addressing potential problems at an early stage.
