What should I do if my hands are burning after cutting chili peppers?
Disease description:
While cooking, I cut chili peppers, and my hands became very spicy/burning. I would like to know, what should I do if my hands feel very spicy/burning after cutting chili peppers?
After cutting chili peppers, a burning sensation on the hands is usually caused by capsaicin coming into contact with the skin. The following methods can help relieve the burning feeling:
1. Rinse with cold water: Immediately rinse hands continuously with cold water to wash away loosely adhered capsaicin on the skin surface and reduce the burning sensation. However, please note that once you stop using cold water, the burning sensation may return. You can try adding ice cubes to the cold water and soaking your hands in it to lower the skin temperature and reduce the burning feeling.
2. Cold compress: Apply a cold compress using ice packs. However, ice should not be applied directly to the skin to avoid frostbite. Wrap the ice with a dry towel or dry cloth before applying the compress. A cold compress can inhibit local skin sensations and reduce skin sensitivity, thereby alleviating discomfort.
3. Neutralization with acidic liquids: Acidic liquids such as vinegar, white vinegar, or lemon juice can neutralize capsaicin and reduce its irritation to the skin on your hands. Pour the acidic liquid into a basin and soak your hands in it while rubbing them together. Repeating this process several times can help alleviate symptoms.
