Disease description:

It's all my own fault for loving alcohol too much. I previously developed alcoholic liver disease, which has now progressed to cirrhosis. I deserve this myself. I'd like to ask the doctor, is cirrhosis contagious?

Dr. Yang Ziqi

Cirrhosis itself is not contagious, but some of the causes of cirrhosis may be. For example, hepatitis B, C, and E virus infections are common causes of cirrhosis, and these viruses are transmissible.

Hepatitis B is primarily transmitted through blood and bodily fluids, such as via unsafe injections, sexual contact, or mother-to-child transmission; hepatitis C is mainly spread through blood, such as by sharing needles or unsafe medical procedures; hepatitis E is primarily transmitted through contaminated food or water.

In addition, individuals with chronic hepatitis B or C who remain untreated may develop cirrhosis, and the viruses they carry can be transmitted to others under certain circumstances. Patients with advanced cirrhosis usually do not transmit cirrhosis itself directly to others due to impaired liver function.

To prevent hepatitis virus infection and the development of cirrhosis, individuals should receive the hepatitis B vaccine, practice safe sex, avoid sharing needles, ensure the safety of food and drinking water, and undergo regular liver function tests.
