What does a positive hepatitis B surface antibody test result mean?
This week I went for a medical checkup, and the report shows that my hepatitis B surface antibody is positive. I would like to ask, what does a positive hepatitis B surface antibody result mean?
A positive hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) indicates the presence of protective antibodies against the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the body. This typically suggests one of the following scenarios:
1. Immune protection: The person has received the hepatitis B vaccine and the immune system has successfully produced antibodies, indicating immunity to hepatitis B and a low likelihood of infection.
2. Natural recovery: If the person was previously infected with hepatitis B but the body has cleared the virus and entered the recovery phase, the presence of HBsAb indicates long-term protective immunity.
3. Latent infection: In some cases, despite a positive HBsAb result, the person may still carry the virus in a latent state. Further testing, such as HBV-DNA testing, is required to confirm this.
To fully assess the hepatitis B status, other markers such as hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), e antigen (HBeAg), e antibody (HBeAb), and core antibody (HBcAb) are usually tested as well. If there are any concerns, timely medical consultation is recommended.
