Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and its symptoms may differ between men and women. In some cases, the infection may even be asymptomatic. In men, common symptoms include frequent urination, urgency, painful urination, redness and swelling of the urethral opening accompanied by a thin mucus discharge, which later turns into yellowish purulent discharge. In women, symptoms may include cervicitis, urethritis, such as redness and swelling of the cervix, purulent discharge, and tenderness or pain in the swollen urethra. Approximately half of infected women and some men may not exhibit obvious symptoms during the early stages of infection, which increases the risk of transmission. If gonorrhea infection is suspected, medical attention should be sought immediately.
