Reduced hemoglobin, also known as deoxyhemoglobin, refers to hemoglobin that is not carrying oxygen and appears purplish-blue. The normal average concentration of reduced hemoglobin in capillary blood is 2 g/dL. When the concentration reaches above 5 g/dL, the skin and mucous membranes may appear cyanotic (bluish-purple), a condition known as cyanosis, commonly seen in states of hypoxia (oxygen deficiency). Reduced hemoglobin plays a vital role in the circulatory system by absorbing oxygen in the lungs and transporting it to tissues throughout the body, making it an essential component for sustaining life. In medical assessments, measuring blood oxygen saturation can help determine the ratio of oxygenated hemoglobin to reduced hemoglobin in the blood, aiding in the evaluation of potential respiratory or circulatory problems. If the level of reduced hemoglobin is abnormally high, it may indicate difficulty breathing, heart disease, or other conditions affecting oxygen delivery, and prompt medical attention is advised.
