The Dangers of Gray Nail (Onychomycosis)
Disease description:
I am 28 years old. Recently, I noticed that my toenail has become cracked and appears slightly discolored. I suspect it might be a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). I would like to ask the doctor: what are the potential risks or harms associated with fungal nail infections?
Onychomycosis, medically termed as tinea unguium, is a nail infection caused by various types of fungi. It may lead to the following complications:
1. **Acting as a source of infection**: Tinea unguium is caused by dermatophyte infection. When coming into contact with other nails or skin areas, it may spread the infection to other body parts.
2. **Affecting nail appearance**: If symptoms are severe and treatment is not promptly administered following diagnosis, abnormal nail coloration may occur. The texture and structural integrity of the nail may also be compromised, affecting its overall appearance.
3. **Causing recurrent infections**: Poor hygiene during treatment may allow re-exposure of the nail to dermatophytes, leading to recurring infections.
4. **Impairing normal fine motor activities of the hands**: As the condition worsens, thickening, shedding, atrophy, and an uneven surface of the nail may develop, thereby affecting normal hand functions.
5. **Causing permanent nail damage**: Failure to treat tinea unguium in a timely manner may result in severe localized pain and cause permanent damage to the nail.
