I was diagnosed with tuberculosis this week, and I am currently in isolation. I really want to ask, can tuberculosis be transmitted to family members?

Dr. Li Jingli
Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and therefore, it can potentially spread to family members. TB is primarily transmitted via droplets. When a person with TB coughs, sneezes, or speaks loudly, they release droplets containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These droplets can be inhaled by others, potentially causing infection. To prevent transmission of TB to family members, patients should follow their doctors' recommendations and actively undergo anti-tuberculosis treatment. They should also maintain personal hygiene during treatment, such as wearing masks, avoiding spitting in public places, and regularly opening windows for ventilation. At the same time, family members should also take appropriate protective measures, such as receiving vaccinations, maintaining indoor air circulation, and avoiding close contact with the patient, in order to reduce the risk of infection.
