What does rubella virus refer to?

Rubella virus is a contagious RNA virus belonging to the genus Rubivirus. This virus is primarily transmitted through airborne droplets, such as through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with the nasal or oral secretions of an infected individual. Rubella commonly occurs in childhood, but adults who have not been vaccinated may also become infected. Infection with the virus leads to rubella, an acute respiratory infectious disease characterized mainly by fever, rash, and swelling of the lymph nodes behind the ears. The disease typically has a short duration and mild symptoms. However, if a pregnant woman becomes infected, the virus can be transmitted to the fetus, potentially causing severe congenital rubella syndrome, which may result in adverse outcomes such as miscarriage, premature birth, congenital malformations, or stillbirth.
